Google Merchant Center Suspended: How to Fix Your Account and Get Shopping Ads Running Again

A full account suspension stops every Shopping and Performance Max campaign you run. The right fix depends on whether you are dealing with product-level disapprovals or a full account suspension. Both are recoverable. This guide covers how to diagnose the difference, fix the root cause and submit an appeal that actually works.

What should I do when my Google Merchant Center account is suspended?

Go to the Account Issues tab in Merchant Center and read the notification carefully to identify the specific policy breach. Fix the root cause completely before submitting an appeal through the official form. Most appeals are reviewed within 3-7 working days. Submitting a review before the fix is complete is the most common reason appeals fail and delays resolution further.

If your Google Merchant Center account has been suspended, your Shopping ads have stopped and every day without them is lost revenue. The most expensive mistake is rushing an appeal before fully understanding and fixing the problem: a failed appeal wastes your review opportunity and extends the downtime. Based on what we see across the accounts we manage, here is how to diagnose the issue, fix it properly and get back online fast.

Product Disapprovals vs Full Account Suspensions: Know the Difference First

These are not the same problem, and treating them as though they are wastes time and review credits.

Product disapprovals affect individual items in your feed. Google flags specific SKUs that violate Shopping policies or contain inaccurate data. Disapproved products stop appearing in Shopping results, but the rest of your catalogue keeps running. The Diagnostics tab in Merchant Center lists every disapproved product alongside its reason code, which tells you exactly what needs fixing.

Account suspensions are more serious. They take your entire Merchant Center offline, pausing all linked Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. Google typically escalates to a full suspension when product-level issues go unaddressed for an extended period, when its systems detect patterns consistent with misrepresentation, or when business information cannot be verified. The suspension notification will reference the specific policy involved.

Why Google Merchant Center Gets Suspended: The Most Common Triggers

In the accounts we manage, the causes group into a handful of categories that come up repeatedly.

Misrepresentation. Google's broadest and most serious policy category covers anything from a misleading returns page to a checkout flow that does not match the advertised landing page. It also covers promotional claims that cannot be substantiated and contact information that fails verification. Google's Shopping ads misrepresentation policy outlines the full scope. This is the most common trigger for full account suspensions.

Price and availability mismatches. Google crawls your product pages and compares prices and stock status against what is in your feed. A discrepancy on even a handful of products can trigger disapprovals. During promotional periods the risk spikes: if your site goes on sale at 9 AM but the feed does not update until the following morning crawl, every affected product is technically advertising the wrong price.

Image policy violations. Images with text overlays, watermarks, placeholder graphics or unusually low resolution get flagged at product level. A clean product image on a plain background is consistently safer for Shopping than a busy lifestyle shot. Google's image requirements for Shopping ads are worth reviewing if image disapprovals appear regularly.

Incorrect or missing GTINs. For branded products, Google expects accurate global trade item numbers. Feeding incorrect GTINs is treated as misrepresentation. Cross-reference GTINs against a verified source before submitting. For products where you genuinely do not have a GTIN, use the identifier_exists attribute set to false rather than inventing a number.

Incomplete business information. Merchant Center requires a verifiable business address, working phone number and an accessible contact page. Accounts with incomplete or unverifiable business details fail basic trust checks and can be suspended without a single product-level issue triggering the action.

How to Fix Product Disapprovals Step by Step

Disapprovals are a feed-level problem and the fix process is straightforward once you know the reason code.

  1. Open Products, then Diagnostics in Merchant Center. Filter by Disapprovals to see every flagged product and its associated reason.
  2. Group disapprovals by reason code. It is common to find dozens of products sharing the same root issue: for example, a price mismatch caused by a sitewide sale or image violations from a recent catalogue upload.
  3. Fix the underlying data in your feed. For price mismatches, update feed prices to reflect current site prices. For image violations, replace the affected images with policy-compliant alternatives. For GTIN issues, correct the identifiers or add the identifier_exists attribute.
  4. Push the corrected feed. For large catalogues, a supplemental feed can override specific attributes without requiring a full feed rebuild.
  5. Request a review in the Diagnostics tab for any products where you have made changes. Google re-crawls and re-evaluates reviewed products, typically within a few days.

The single most important step is confirming the fix is complete before requesting the review. In our experience, partial fixes followed by premature review requests are the most common cause of repeat disapprovals on the same products.

How to Appeal a Full Account Suspension

A full account suspension requires a more deliberate process. The order matters: identify the problem, fix everything, then appeal. Reversing that order is the most common mistake.

Step 1: Identify the specific policy breach. The suspension email and the Account Issues tab in Merchant Center will name the policy category. For misrepresentation, this typically means reviewing your homepage, returns policy page, shipping information page, checkout flow and any promotional claims made anywhere on the site. Be thorough: Google's reviewers look at the whole account and site, not only the element that was originally flagged.

Step 2: Fix the root cause completely. If the stated issue is your returns policy but your shipping page also has inaccurate content, the appeal will likely fail even after you fix the returns page. Run a full review of every policy-adjacent element in one pass before submitting anything.

Step 3: Submit the appeal. In Merchant Center, go to Account Issues and use the Appeal option. Write a specific explanation of what the policy breach was, what you changed and where. Vague appeals such as "we have reviewed our policies" perform significantly worse than specific ones such as "we updated the returns policy page to include the full 30-day return window, corrected the contact telephone number to a verified UK number, and confirmed all product landing page prices match the feed exactly."

Step 4: Wait 3-7 working days. Do not submit duplicate appeals for the same issue. Multiple submissions for the same suspension do not accelerate the process and can create complications in the review queue.

If a first appeal is rejected and you believe the account now meets all requirements, you can submit a second appeal with updated evidence. A second rejection typically means there is still an underlying issue that has not been identified. At that point, a methodical site and feed audit is more productive than further appeals.

Feed Health Checks That Prevent Future Suspensions

Most Merchant Center suspensions are preventable with routine feed hygiene. The checks we run regularly across managed accounts:

For Shopify stores, the Google and YouTube app provides a solid baseline feed sync, but it typically misses custom attributes, bundle products and sale price handling. A supplemental feed to override specific attributes is usually worth adding for any catalogue with more than a few hundred SKUs. If you are managing feeds manually or through a third-party platform, scheduling a full feed validation as part of your weekly operations prevents the slow data drift that leads to bulk disapprovals over time.

A Merchant Center suspension does not have to mean weeks of lost Shopping revenue. In the accounts we work through, resolution typically happens within 3-10 working days when the fix is thorough and the appeal is specific. If you are dealing with a suspension now and want a second set of eyes on the feed and account setup, our free PPC audit includes a Merchant Center and feed health check as standard. We provide Google Ads management for UK e-commerce stores including full feed management, ongoing Merchant Center monitoring and Shopping campaign strategy across niches including cycling, fishing and outdoor retail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Google Merchant Center suspension appeal take?

Most appeals are reviewed within 3-7 working days. If the appeal is rejected and you believe the decision is incorrect, you can submit a second appeal with additional supporting information. Appeals that address the root cause specifically tend to resolve faster than vague submissions.

Can I run Shopping ads while my Merchant Center account is suspended?

No. A full account suspension pauses all linked Shopping campaigns and Performance Max campaigns that use product feeds. You cannot run any Shopping inventory until the suspension is lifted. Search ads in a separate Google Ads account are unaffected.

What is the most common reason for Google Merchant Center suspension?

Misrepresentation is cited most often. This covers discrepancies between your website content and your ad landing pages, inaccurate business information, or promotional claims that cannot be substantiated. Price and availability mismatches are the second most common trigger.

Do product disapprovals affect my Google Ads account?

Product disapprovals affect your Shopping inventory directly (disapproved products do not show) but do not automatically suspend your Google Ads account. However, accumulated product-level issues can escalate to an account suspension in Merchant Center, which then pauses all linked Shopping campaigns.
